Frequently Asked Questions
Do you do wedding invitations or custom work?
While I would love to offer wedding invitations, due to having a full-time job it’s a little too hard to find the time to create custom invitations at the moment. In the future I plan to design a range of wedding invitations - so keep tuned!
However, if you see an existing design I’ve done and need a certain quantity made or a different colour combination, contact me as I can most likely help you with that!
Are you self-taught?
Yes. Although I had plans to take a course before I bought a press, one came up for sale that I couldn’t turn down. I then had to start researching how to restore my press and in the process learned the basics of letterpress. While I don’t claim to be an expert, I think I’m pretty proficient these days.
Where did you get your press?
I got my press off ebay, which I luckily got for a reasonable price. While I occasionally see presses come up for sale on ebay I’m amazed at the price people are paying for them. With the growing interest in letterpress it seems the cost is rising. If you can wait, hold out and the right press will come along.
What paper do you use?
My favourite paper to use is Crane Lettra, although I have tried Somerset Museum Rag which is nice but not quite as heavy.
Where do you get your photopolymer plates made?
I use Boxcar Press for my plates, the quality is great and shipping is quick.
What program do you design in?
I use Adobe Illustrator to create my designs. To get the best quality plates made you really need to design in a vector program. To put it in the easiest terms a vector means that if you zoomed in 500% your design would still be perfectly clear and sharp, as opposed to designing in Photoshop where at 500% your design would be severely pixelated.
