Recently bought this piece from The Hungry Workshop for a bit of inspiration - the registration is absolutely perfect!
I really need to get my butt in gear and get back on the press!
New party invites I did on the weekend - contact me if you’re interested in them!
As usual even the most simple design in letterpress can have it’s ups and downs. At one point the balloon wasn’t getting inked at all by the rollers, even though everything seemed to be ok. After pulling out and putting the chase back in about 5 times it magically started inking again - go figure! I’m blaming the wooden chase.
While looking for inspiration for new necklace designs I came across this cool tutorial for making your own geometric necklaces out of polymer clay. So I thought I’d give it a go - not too bad huh?
Just stumbled across my necklace on my favourite site Pinterest - cool!
Ok so I have to tell you about a great aussie site called The Huntress (and not just because they mentioned me on their blog - thanks guys!).
They’re all about finding the best online fashion that ships to Australia and hunting down cool local stores as well, which I can already tell is not going to be good for my budget!
Make sure you take a look!
So my alphabet necklaces arrived a couple of weeks ago and have been selling really quickly, I only have five left which is fantastic. Most of them are heading over to the US but one will be going over to Paris - how exciting!
Plus I’ve just finished making up these cute miniature necklaces which are laser-cut out of bamboo so they have a really nice texture. I originally had planned for them to just be strung on a chain by themselves, but I didn’t take into account how light they are, they wouldn’t lie flat and so looked kind of strange. Anyway I think these alternatives turned out pretty good, I’m going to play around with a few other options as well.
1. Circle Bamboo Necklace
2. Hexagon Bamboo Necklace
3. Square Bamboo Necklace
4. Star Bamboo Necklace
5. Teardrop Bamboo Necklace
6. Triangle Bamboo Necklace
Last weekend I finished printing the second colour of these fill-in birth announcements that I’ve had sitting around for ages. I’m so happy with how these turned out. I’ve got another style that I’ve yet to print, as well as birthday invitations, baby shower invites, notebooks… the list goes on.
Anyway, as I’ve only got a few of these announcements I probably won’t put them up on the Etsy store but if anyone’s interested in them contact me and I can make them to order.
Nothing exciting happening on the press today. I had to level the platen again as it had gotten slightly out of whack. I guess I hadn’t noticed it as the designs I’ve done lately have been quite small. But today I tested out a pattern that I’ve been thinking of using as a background for some business cards, and the right side of the press was giving far less impression than the left.
Anyway, that’s been fixed now, although as small as the background pattern was (about 7 x 7cm) it was really testing the capabilities of my press. He really didn’t like having to print that large an area, so I’ll have to be quite strict about keeping my designs simple and perhaps rethink the business card design.
I have a problem…I get distracted by things…a lot. I get inspired by all sorts of things, from jewelry to furniture and my mind starts to think ‘I could do that!’.
So far, letterpress has seemed to have held my attention for a while now, and has taught me patience, something I’m not very good at when I get obsessed with something. And I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of looking at a perfectly printed piece with just the right amount of impression, it makes me happy just thinking about it.
But being as fickle as I am means I never focus my attention on any one thing at a time and I jump from one hobby to the next. So why am I telling you this? Well before Ietterpress my last obsession was jewelry - more specifically laser cut jewelry. It started when someone showed me ponoko.com and my mind instantly started thinking up things I could make. The first piece I made is shown above and turned out pretty well, so as an experiment I started up an Etsy store called Little Red Lantern. I’ve done a few other pieces (most of which are still sitting unfinished in a shoebox in my closet!) but the alphabet necklace is the one I get asked for all the time. Which brings me to my point. Little Red Lantern has been sadly abandoned over the last 6 months and really deserves a little TLC. So I’m going to attempt to split some time between letterpress and the jewelry and we’ll see how it goes.
Expect to see some jewelry posts mingled in with letterpress in the near future!
